SUNDAY'S deadly accident in which an SMRT bus overturned raises concerns about the roadworthiness of the vehicle ("Passenger killed after SMRT bus overturns", Monday; and "My brakes failed, claims driver in bus tragedy", Tuesday).迷你倉新蒲崗On the one hand, the bus driver claims that the brakes failed, causing him to lose control of the vehicle. On the other hand, SMRT says the bus was last maintained on June 21, and no brake or steering-related problems were noted during the inspection.A further investigation should be made into these claims. With a massive fleet of buses at its disposal, SMRT would ha迷你倉出租e a strict and effective maintenance schedule in place, governed by proper quality controls.SMRT has, in the past, assured Singaporeans that its buses are well maintained.Further reassurances on how it maintains its buses, as well as its measures and precautions to ensure safety, would go a long way towards allaying the concerns of commuters. Also, if the brakes were indeed faulty, would SMRT conduct an overall review of the brake systems in all its buses? This is important because it is possible that heavy use may have led to accelerated wear and tear of the brake mechanism.V.
