Food bank will get a serving of Phish

Source: Reading Eagle, Pa.迷你倉Oct. 26--A portion of proceeds from the sold-out Phish concert at Reading's Santander Arena on Tuesday will be donated to the Greater Berks Food Bank. The 30-year-old rock band's charitable wing, the WaterWheel Foundation, raises funds for a pre-selected nonprofit in each community the band visits while on tour. Doug Long, the food bank's manager of marketing and development, said he got a call from a WaterWheel representative out of the blue three weeks ago saying the food bank had been selected."It was one of those really fortunate calls that you get that someone wants to help you out," Long said.Phish is known for its loyal fans -- also known as "phans" or "Phish heads" -- and an expected 8,500 of them will be at Tuesday's concert. The WaterWheel Foundation was created by Phish in 1997.Matthew Beck, associate director of the foundation, said he was searching for charities in the Reading area online and the food bank seemed like a good fit."mini storagee try to choose smaller grassroots organizations in the community we're going to so that we're able to make a significant impact on their programs," Beck said.Food bank volunteers will man a table at the concert from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. and hand out information about the WaterWheel Foundation and the food bank. That's a great opportunity for the food bank to raise awareness about what it does, Long said. The Greater Berks Food Bank serves about 60,000 people in Berks, Schuylkill and western Montgomery counties. This year, officials expect to distribute more than 7 million pounds of food to more than 300 charitable food assistance programs, which include food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, after-school programs and senior housing facilities.Contact Beth Anne Heesen: 610-371-5084 or bheesen@readingeagle.com.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the Reading Eagle (Reading, Pa.)
