"From that moment, that was it."In honor of International Spay Day in February, HST will offer low-cost spay and neuter services Feb. 1-28."This is part of our mission to end pet overpopulation by making spay and neuter services accessible to everyone," said Gina Gardner, HST's president.Titled "The February Fix," the campaign features events at HST's adoption and veterinary center, as well as a touring mobile clinic throughout the state, with $40 spay and neuter services for cats, $50 for dogs, explained agency spokeswoman Lori Griffin McPherson. She was the one who told us about Karma, a 2-year-old pit bull rescued from a dog-fighting ring. When Kevin and Wendy chose to adopt a dog, "we had no idea that it would be a life-changer for both of us," he said.Up until that time, they only had fish, but Wendy really wanted a dog. So they went to the HST with the intention of finding a small dog.But a certain pit bull caught their attention."When he looked at me with his sad brown eyes, you could feel the rough past he had been through," Kevin said.Karma became a Frankenburger family member on Nov. 8, a special gift on Wendy's birthday. When they first brought Karma home, he immediately bonded with the family, Kevin said. The sweet pit enjoys chewing on his bone and lying at Kevin's and Wendy's feet, as well as going for long walks and playing soccer in the backyard.Someone at Spirit Ranch Professional Dog Training has given the dog private training lessons to help with Karma's shyness so he can join the group classes. At home, the Frankenburgers work on his socialization skills and commands."At first, we were slightly worried by the fact that he is a pit bull and the negative associations that follow the breed," Kevin said. But they realized quickly that pit bulls can be a "wonderful, loving, smart and loyal breed.""Now, when I look into his eyes, I only see love," said Kevin. "By adopting him, he was given a second chance at life" -- hence the name Karma. When people ask the Frankenburgers how they picked Karma, they tell them that he picked them."We can't thank the Tulsa Humane Society enough," said Kevin. "They were wonderful in answering all of our questions and still keep in touch with us."We are thankful that they exist to help find homes for all the wonderful dogs that just need a good home," he said. For more, including information on how to adopt an animal or to make a $45 donation to sponsor an animal's surgery, call 918-495-3647.
