UNC Asheville claims rare women's basketball victory over Liberty
Source: The News & Advance, Lynchburg, Va.自存倉Jan. 19--In Asheville, N.C., Ja'Da Brayboy's steal and free throws with less than 10 seconds remaining in overtime gave UNC Asheville some needed breathing room as the Bulldogs escaped Kimmel Arena with an 83-80 victory over Liberty on Saturday afternoon.The victory for the Bulldogs (8-10, 5-4 Big South) ends Liberty's 16-game winning streak in Asheville and the Flames' 13-game wining streak in the series. The loss drops Liberty (11-7, 7-2) into a tie with Winthrop for first place in the Big South, but the Flames own the tiebreaker following Thursday's overtime victory."I'm really disappointed with our effort on defense. Period," Liberty coach Carey Green said in his postgame radio interview.Brayboy (16 points) sent the game into overtime as she hit a pair of free throws with 7.1 seconds left that tied the score at 72-72. The Bulldogs took a 79-76 lead with 2:56 left in the extra session following a three-point play from Shonese Jones (17 points).Ashley Rininger (game-high 21 points) scored three straight points to tie the game before picking up her fifth foul. Asheville went 2-for-4 at the line over the next few possessions to take an 81-79 lead with 25 seconds remaining.An off-ball foul gave Katelyn Adams (11 points, 10 rebounds) two free throws. She made the first and missed the second but Catherine Kearney (11 points, eight rebounds) corralled the offensive rebound. As Reagan Miller (eight points) was setting up the offense, contact with Brayboy jarred the ball loose and Brayboy was able to run off precious seconds before being fouled.Emily Frazier finished with 11 points, nine assists and five rebounds as Liberty played its first back-to-back overtime games since Dec. 9 and 10, 1983.Lynchburg 70, Emory & Henry 46In Lynchburg, Charmaine Hairston scored a game-high 18 points and Chaney Forbush added 13 as the Hornets (8-7, 5-1 ODAC) cruised to an easy victory over the visiting Wasps (3-12, 1-5).Lynchburg shot 45.8 percent from the floor and built a 25-point lead late in the final 20 minutes. Shannon Allen finished with 11 points. Karina Farr led Emory & Henry with 11 points. Kristie Langley added eight points and nine rebounds.Shenandoah 70, Randolph 61In Lynchburg, Imani Heggins scored a game-high 25 points and Holly Chittenden finished with 15 points and 14 rebounds as the Hornets (6-9, 3-3 ODAC) pull迷你倉出租d away late from the homestanding WildCats (8-7, 2-4).Randolph took a 61-57 lead with 4:53 remaining following a pair of free throws from Brie Holdren (Staunton River, seven points). Dunton added eight rebounds and seven assists.MEN'S BASKETBALLLynchburg 71, Washington & Lee 66In Lexington, Alex Graves and Zack Burnett each scored 13 points as the Hornets (11-4, 4-2 ODAC) rallied from an early second-half deficit to upend the Generals (5-10, 2-4).Lynchburg overcame a 39.7-percent shooting effort and only one point from leading scorer Manny Hernandez to pull away. Hernandez finished with team highs of seven rebounds and four assists to offset an 0-for-8 performance from the floor.Drew Kimberly led Washington & Lee with 18 points and eight rebounds. Andrew Franz finished with 12 points and five rebounds. Lynchburg held a 37-17 edge in bench points, 22-9 edge in points off turnovers and 36-26 edge in points in the paint.Randolph-Macon 60, Randolph 53In Ashland, the Yellow Jackets (11-4, 5-1 ODAC) built an 11-point second-half lead and got 16 points from Joe Hassell to hold off the WildCats (9-6, 3-3).Corey Brown (game-high 17 points) scored five points in a three-second span that cut Randolph-Macon's lead to 56-53. Brown made a pair of free throws and converted off a turnover with a 3-pointer with 43 seconds remaining.The WildCats went 0-for-3 from the field after that as Randolph-Macon converted at the free-throw line. Mike Ehilegbu finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds for Randolph. Connor Sullivan scored 11 points and Marcus Badger and Akeem Holmes each added 10 for the Yellow Jackets.VUL 70, Johnson & Wales 62In Charlotte, N.C., Irving Cato scored a game-high 23 points and added seven rebounds as the Dragons won the championship game of the JWU Invitational over the host Wildcats (8-14).Dennis Gravely added 14 points and seven rebounds for VUL.
