Sutter holds on for win over Orland

Source: Appeal-Democrat, Marysville, Calif.儲存Oct. 05--ORLAND -- The wind that unfurled the American Flag behind the goal post gave Orland High's potential game-tying field goal attempt a push to the left as zeros flashed across the clock and preserved Sutter's 21-18 victory Friday night at Trojan Stadium.Orland junior kicker Eric Anguiano returned from an injury in the first half, and his kick had the distance, but the tricky wind nudged the ball just a few feet and allowed Sutter to celebrate a critical Butte View League victory.A handful of early mistakes by the Trojans (3-2, 1-1) staked Sutter (4-1, 2-0) to a 14-0 lead in a showdown between two of the top teams in the BVL.Trevor Holt forced fumbles on consecutive plays, setting up a 14-point outburst in a span of 10 seconds at the start of the second quarter.Holt jarred the ball loose from Orland's massive 6-feet-4-inch, 225-pound fullback, Arthur Flynn and Chase Gildea picked it up at the Trojan 4-yard line. Alex Ingram ran it in on the next play.Orland started their next drive at the 20 after a touchback, but Holt poked the ball out on the exchange and Brayden Hungrige picked it up and ran 16 yards for a touchdown."Every year, Orland comes out physical and we just prepare ourselves to do better and better each year, we expected it," Hungrige said. "I'm very confident in getting the BVL title but we have to come back every week and keep fighting."Joe Salinthone broke free around the left end on the Trojans' next drive for a 60-yard touchdown run. Sutter was called for a roughing-the-kicker penalty on the point-after attempt and Anguiano left the game with a leg injury and his backup missed the kick.On Orland's first drive of the second half, Salinthone took a sweep to the right side in for a 9-yard touchdown run but the 2-point conversion came up short.Sutter regrouped with a 12-play, 80-yard scoring drive, capped off by a 2-yard touchdown run by Brad Bonnenfant on the first play of the fourth quarter.Orland drove into the Huskies' red zone on their next drive but stalled after a false start penalty and turned it over on downs, but on Sutter's first play of the following d儲存倉ive, Christian Ortega stripped the ball and Tyler Batchelder grabbed it out of the air and ran it 17-yards for a touchdown.Late in the fourth quarter, the Huskies drove to the Orland 10-yard line but Mirsha Rosas intercepted a fourth-down pass in the end zone and returned it back to the 10 with a little more than 2 minutes remaining in the game.Aided by a Sutter pass interference, and two big plays by Trojans quarterback Batchelder, Orland stopped the clock with .2 seconds remaining for Anguiano's field goal attempt.Batchelder rushed for 120 yards on 24 carries and completed 5 of 16 passes for 46 yards. Salinthone made the most of his three carries, rushing for 75 yards and 2 touchdowns. Receiver Kavi Ram finished with 49 yards rushing and 35 yards receiving.Ingram led Sutter with 93 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries, and quarterback Randy Post finished with 23 yards rushing and completed 4 of 11 passes for 56 yards and an interception. Bonnenfant had 7 yards rushing and a touchdown, and caught a pass for 15 yards.Despite the loss, Orland coach Mike McDonald commended his players for fighting back after the early mistakes put them in a hole against one of the top teams in the north state.McDonald's arrival in 2009 began a turnaround for the program. When he arrived, Orland had four consecutive losing seasons. The success didn't arrive immediately, the Trojans went 4-6 during his first two years before Orland won the league, and section, titles in 2011 with an 11-1 campaign.Last year the Trojans gave Sutter two of its tougher contests but the Huskies won both games en route to winning the section title and earning a berth in a state bowl game. The only other team to beat Orland last year was Central Valley. This season, both teams entered the game with identical 3-1 records. Sutter's loss came against a loaded El Cerrito team while the Trojans again lost to fellow Division II school Central Valley.CONTACT Sports Reporter Kirk Barron at 749-4789.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the Appeal-Democrat (Marysville, Calif.)
