How can I grow rosemary in Singapore's hot and humid climate? The pot I bought a month ago has dried up.mini storage I watered it once a day – is that too much?C.K. LimRosemary comes from the Mediterranean region, where the growing conditions are quite different from those in Singapore. To grow the plant well here, you need to have it grown in well-draining soil. Rosemary hates growing in clay-filled, heavy and sticky soil, and having constantly wet feet. You can concoct your own soil mix – one part coarse, chunky burnt earth, and one part compost. Add more burnt earth if you want to enhance drainage.Although the plant is sensitive to constant soil moisture, it does not mean you should withhold water altogether. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely or the plant will wilt after prolonged periods. Extended drought can destroy the roots. The rosemary plant also needs to be grown in a sunny location. In an apartment, place it where it can get four to six hours of direct sunlight. The lack of sunlight will lead to poor growth and a weak plant. Moisture in the soil will not evaporate fast enough, leading to wet feet and related diseases. To grow rosemary from cuttings, you may want to root the tip cuttings in coarse sand, instead of directly in soil.I have some grapevines growing on my porch. Sometimes, orange or white powdery fungi appear on some of the vine leaves, which are absentself storageon the other plants. How do the fungi arrive and how can I eradicate them? What is the best way to grow grapevines?Siew Tien ChouYou have described fungal infections: The orange fungal spots are likely signs of rust disease, while the white powdery spots point to powdery mildew.Grapes can be tricky to grow in the tropics, as they can be sensitive to heat and humidity. It is recommended to grow resistant varieties. With your current plant, you can only manage the incidence and severity of the diseases encountered. It is best to deal with the situation in an environment-friendly way. Always remove and destroy diseased leaves to reduce the likelihood of diseases spreading. Prune excess, overcrowded shoots and leaves to improve air circulation around the foliage.Keep vines well ventilated and ensure that they get adequate direct sunlight. Avoid spraying the leaves with water as this will increase humidity around the foliage which makes the plants more prone to such diseases. That said, do water the plant well and mulch its base with good quality compost to keep the roots hydrated and cool. This will prevent heat and drought stress, which can weaken the plant and make them prone to diseases.Answers by Dr Wilson Wong, a certified practising horticulturist and founder of Green Culture Singapore (.greenculturesg.com), a website for plant lovers.
